Learn how to draw a moth in ink and colour with simple steps. A beginner-friendly and easy step-by-step art tutorial to create delicate, nature-inspired drawings.
Moths are often seen as the quieter cousins of butterflies, but in the world of art, they hold their own charm. Their wings carry fascinating shapes and markings that make them a delightful subject to draw. If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly project that mixes creativity with calmness, a moth drawing in ink and colour is just the thing. With just a pen, some colours, and a little patience, you can create a piece of nature-inspired art that feels delicate yet striking.
Step 1
Start with drawing a straight line which will form the base of the triangle. You can use a ruler for this or just free hand. I drew a 9 cm straight line using a scale.
Step 2
With the straight line as base, we have to draw an isoceles triangle : a triangle with two equal sides. There are many ways to do this. I have used a geometrical compass, as this is the fastest way to draw a triangle with equal sides. Just make sure that the height of the triangle is more than the base length. This would ensure a proportional drawing. Also, stay safe while using compass. Draw the arcs and mark the intersection point. This would be the tip of the triangle.
Step 3
Now, join the tip with either ends of the base line. and there you have an isoceles triangle. You can also use a ruler to draw a triangle, that would be some maths fun.
Step 4
From the tip of the triangle, draw a straight line down to the base line. You will realise that this line divides the triangle into two equal halves and hence becomes the line of symmetry.
Step 5
Now, that we have the basic shape, let’s add reference lines and point. Just a short distance below the tip ( maybe half a cm below), mark a horizontal line, which will be the head line for the moth.
Step 6
Next, almost at the middle of the line of symmetry, mark a point and draw a circle around it. This will help us to draw the overlapping wings of the moth.
Please do not worry if the measurements are not exactly the same. There is no wrong way of doing this. You might just end up drawing a moth with a bigger head or larger wing span. It would still be a moth.
Step 7
It’s time to add the details. Add the wings in form of flower petals, dropping down from the head line. Make sure that the outline goes around the circle in the centre, and follows the shape of the triangle.
Step 8
Draw the head and body of the moth along the line of symmetry.
Step 9
Draw tiny little eyes and antenna on top of the head and the pencil drawing is complete.
Step 10
Use a black marker pen to darken the lines and there you have it, the moth in ink.
Step 11
Though the moth is complete in 10 easy steps, I like to add details to my drawing. I have used a fine tip pen to add details to the wing.
Step 12
Now it’s coloring time. Use any of your favourite colors for the wings and body.
You can directly add color to the pencil drawing also. Use your imagination and fill the wings with creative pattern and colors, like the one below.
Drawing a moth is more than a simple project—it’s a reminder of how beauty often hides in quiet details. This easy process combines the precision of ink with the softness of colour, making it a soothing way to build your art skills. Try it out, experiment with patterns, and let your creativity take flight!
